Chicago baseball was on display Sunday September 4th both in Chicago and Detroit. The Cubs would manage to avoid a sweep while the Sox got swept in Detroit. Both teams have played poorly this season for the most part and look to just make some positive strides to wrap up the 2011 season.
The Cubs got their 60th win Sunday and avoided a sweep by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the process. The final was 6-3 and was the Cubs 33rd win at home. They are just 33-39 at Wrigley this season. Pitcher Randy Wells pitched great throughout giving up just one run. The Pirates fell to 64-76 on the season with the loss and struggled at the plate for most of the game.
In all, the Cubs got 10 hits They were able to score in 5 of the 8 innings they batted in however, and that combined with a good performance by Wells was enough for the victory. Wells moved his record to 7-4 on the season with the victory. Sean Marshall came on late to close the game and record his fourth save.
The pirates also got 10 hits, but could not string them together to produce runs. This included a homerun by Neil Walker, which was his twelfth of the season. Their pitching had difficulties throughout the game keeping runs from getting across inning to inning. The loss was credited to pitcher Charlie Morton who moved to 9-9 on the year.
Meanwhile, the White Sox got clobbered 18-2 in Detroit by the hometown Tigers. Detroit really handed it to the Sox throughout the game and got 4 innings in which they scored more than 2 runs. They scored in 5 of 8 innings batted and had 2 innings that they scored 5 or more runs. Meanwhile their pitching dominated throughout until the 9th inning when the Sox were able to muster up a couple of dignity runs.
In all, the Tigers had whopping 24 hits including 2 home runs. Miguel Cabrera hit his 26 homer of the year while Andy Dirks added his 7th. Pitching was lights out as they held the White Sox scoreless for 8 innings. The win was awarded to Max Scherzer who moved to 14-8 this year. The win completed a sweep of the White Sox and moved the Tigers to 78-62 this year. They have been a very impressive 42-29 in games played in Detroit.
The White Sox got just 9 hits in the game. Their only two runs came in the 9th when they were able to string some hits together to get a couple runs across and try to at least have a moral victory. The loss put the Sox a game under 500 on the season at 68-69. Mark Buehrle was credited with the loss, which put his record to 11-7 this season. Even away in Detroit they could not get a win in the series. Normally this would not matter, but the Sox had been impressive away from Chicago where they held a 37-32 record overall. The White Sox have been on one roller coaster of a ride this year, and the future of the team may rest on how the rest of the season pans out.
