The White Sox won on July 2ndto pull to a perfect .500 at 42-42 this year. The win came on a pitching battle between Philip Humber and Matt Garza. In the end a run scored in the top of the 6thby the White Sox would turn out to be the difference.
The White Sox Humber held on to get his 8thwin of the year compared to just 4 losses. In all, the Sox got 5 hits total. The hit that produced the winning run came from left fielder Juan Pierre in the top of the sixth inning. Matt Thornton was able to come in and close the game to get his third save of the season. The win also gave the Sox a winning away record at 23-22 this year when not at home.
The Cubs got zero runs on 5 hits, and although Garza pitched well the offense could not produce against Humber. The loss brought the Cubs record to 34-50 on the year as they continue to struggle at Wrigley. The loss brings their home record to 19-26. Garva pitched well, but unfortunately got credited with his 7thloss of the season.
The two teams will close out the series July 3rd at 2:20 PM ET where the Sox will look to get above 500 while the cubs hope for a moral victory. Gavin Floyd is set to start for the White Sox while Rodrigo Lopez gets the nod for the Cubbies. Floyd is 6-7 on the year with a 4.19 earned run average. Lopez is yet to win this year and has two losses. He brings a, less than average, 5.40 ERA to the rubber. The series has continued to bring high emotions to the windy city and the games have been very exciting for fans with plenty of players leaving everything out on the field. I do not expect anything to change in the series finale.
