Chicago baseball on July 7thincluded an incredible comeback by the Cubs in a battle away from Chicago in our nation’s capital. Back in Chicago, the White Sox could not be so lucky and were unable to get the offense going.
The Cubs won after rallying in the last 4 innings to get a rare road win against the Washington Nationals. The win is just the 16thof the year for the team when playing away from Wrigley. Before the 6thinning, the team was down 8-0, and began their rally by scoring 6 runs in the top of the 6thinning. From there, they would tack on 2 more in the 7thand one more in each the 8thand 9thinning to get their 36 victory of the season.
The win for the Cubs moved their overall record to 36-53 on the year. In all, they scored 10 runs on 15 hits. Two Cubbies, Carlos Pena and Blake DeWitt were able to go yard in the game. It was the 19thhomerun of the year for Pena While Blake hit his 2ndof the season. Cub’s pitcher Sean Marshall recorded his 5thwin of the year while Carlos Marmol came in to close the game and record his 18thsave.
The Nationals loss dropped their record to one game above 500 on the year at 45-44. They have played well this season at home, with a 27-16 record, but were unable to close out a game they seemed to have won after a 7-run 3rdinning. In all the Nats scored 9 runs on 13 hits, which would win you most ball games. The painful loss gets credited to pitcher Henry Rodriguez who is now 3-2 this year.
The Cubs will continue their away games in Pittsburgh July 8thagainst the Pirates at PNC Park. The Pirates have a surprising 45-42 record and are 21-21 at home this season. The game is set to start at 7:05 PM ET with Rodrigo Lopez on the mound for the Cubs against Pirate pitcher James McDonald. Lopez is 1-2 on the season with a 3.91 ERA. McDonald carries a 5-4 record into the game with a 4.40 ERA.
Meanwhile, back in Chicago, the White Sox were at home against the Twins. In the game, Joe Maurer debuted at a new first base position and played well for Minnesota. The game ended 6-2 as Minnesota proved too much for the Sox. In all, Minnesota had 13 hits and opened up the game scoring 3 runs in the first 2 innings to set the tone. Twins pitcher, Carl Pavano got his 6thwin of the year to get him to an even 6-6 record this season.
The White Sox continue to struggle and now are just 43-46 this season. They were only able to get 6 hits in the game and their only 2 runs of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Pitcher Philip Humber recorded his 5thloss of the year as well for the Sox.
The two teams will meet again on July 8th at 8:10 PM ET. Set to start for the White Sox will be Gavin Floyd who looks to improve on a 6-8 record and 4.17 ERA. Minnesota will start Nick Blackburn on the mound. Blackburn is 6-6 this season with a 4.02 ERA.
