The Chicago White Sox made plenty of bold moves during the 2009 season and this off-season.
Trading for all-star pitcher Jake Peavy, claiming former all-star OF Alex Rios and his $60 million contract and trading for Juan Pierre, showed this organizations desire to win another championship.
The Sox may have the desire, but apparently desire doesn't win games.
After the first two weeks, the Sox haven't lived up to their full potential.
Here are my observations after the first 12 games of the season:
Record: 4-8
- Losing games in your own division is never a good glimpse of things to come.
Pitching
- The starting 5 were being hailed as one of the best in the MLB. Danks and Buehrle have looked good. Peavy needs to start playing to his full ability.
- Danks and Buehrle have looked good.
- Peavy needs to start playing to his full ability. He had a good game against the Indians on Saturday, but did give up the tying home run in the 8th.
- The Sox could have one of the best bull-pens in the MLB. The BP has a combined 2.39 ERA through 12 games.
- Sergio Santos, a former 1st round draft pick as a short stop who's been pitching for only 9 months, looks like the real deal. He has not allowed 1 run in 4 games.
Hitting
- Juan Pierre needs to get on base. He's batting .186 with 43 AB (At Bats).
- AJ Pierzynski is in the last year of his contract. He is not playing like it is (.189 avg., 1 RBI)
- Alex Rios is starting to look like his old self. He's playing great in CF (0 Errors) and has been coming up with big hits when the Sox needed them.
- Mark Teahan seems to look better every game.
12 games isn't a lot of games and there is still a lot of baseball to be played.
The New York Yankees had a losing record going in May last year.
They ended up winning another World Series.
We'll see if this team can follow that trend.
