Well, I was wrong when I said the Bears would beat the Titans last week. I was wrong when I said the Bears would put together a few scoring drives. I was wrong thinking that the second and third units would put some drives together. I was wrong thinking that the Bears would rebound after getting plastered on national TV against the Giants. Turns out I should trust my gut. And my gut says that the Bears are not going to replicate their success from a year ago. I am open to being proved wrong, and the Bears have one more chance to figure things out tomorrow night.
First, a bit of a look back, as the Bears did look pretty good for a quarter against Tennessee. Matt Forte had a touchdown and Jay Cutler completed over sixty percent of his passes. The offensive line only gave up one sack throughout the night in a nice performance. Unfortunately, the positives were far outweighed by the negatives, and the negatives seem to be piling up this preseason.
Jay Cutler was intercepted again, and not entirely because of a throw he made. His intended target was presumed number one receiver, Roy Williams, who couldn’t make the grab. The ball whizzed through Williams’s hands and was tipped into the air into the waiting arms of Michael Griffin. Williams was brought in to be the tall, star receiver that Cutler needed to thrive in Mike Martz’s circus offense. Ok, Williams is tall, but his preseason has been awful, as he has been plagued by the dropsies and plays like the one against Tennessee.
A good portion of the Bears’ success hinges on the receiving corps this season, and Williams is not doing a good job of living up to his hype. What he is living up to is his reputation as a mediocre, overrated receiver. There is a reason he never took off in Dallas. That reason is he simply isn’t that great. He thinks he is a number one, he acts like he is a number one, but he plays like a number three. The worst part is that he has brought his irritating “first down” gesture with him. You know, the pretend signal he makes after he makes a catch for a first down. He did it against the Giants, on a ball that he didn’t even catch! I don’t mind the prima donna antics of receivers as much as some people, but coming from Williams, they are pathetic. Here’s an idea, Roy, catch the damned ball! Do it consistently and actually prove you can live up to your draft hype before you go around acting like you’re the best receiver in the league.
Ok, rant over. I’m not a fan of Williams, but I understand he is needed for this team to succeed. So again, I’d love to be proven wrong. I’d love for Williams to have multiple hundred yard games with 12-15 touchdowns this year. Do I think it will happen? No. But if he does, the Bears will be very good.
They play Cleveland tomorrow in their last preseason game, so the first team offense will only be out for a quarter or so. For the sake of Bears fans everywhere, it’d be nice to see them score a touchdown after a nice drive featuring many appearances by Roy Williams. Even if that means seeing his stupid first down gesture.
